Some of the movies reviewed here are old, some of the reviews are old.  We will come back and make updates on them from time to time.  Unless it says some one else did the review - blame it on Rick.
Men in Black
A wonderful spoof with great effects. A real SF Comedy, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones play their parts straight, its the events that make it funny..Well worth seeing and if you haven't seen it yet, its out on tape and DVD. And coming to the big screen is Men 2.
UPDATE:10/2007 - Men in Black 2 has been and gone.  Good luck to anyone who wants in on VHS anymore.
Men in Black II
This film reunites Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones as the Men in Black with more adventures with all the Aliens that live on Earth, that no one knows about. This film was as funny as the first - and hopefully marks the beginning of a great SF Comedy series.
UPDATE:10/2007 - Still waiting for number 3 Both I and II are out on DVD.
Starship Troopers
Having been a fan of RAH and having read all his SF work I was looking forward to this film in two ways - wanting to see it, and worried about what they did to it. Since the book was published in 1959 and the movie made in 1997 their were changes - rather they were good or bad will can be debated at another time. But the movie was good SF and it had the feel of RAH to it. And I think some of the changes were done to reflect his latter life writing. (CO-ED ARMY) If you like good SF you will enjoy Starship Trooper. If you are one of those unhappy people who feel that a movie must follow the book word for word, you will not like this one either.
UPDATE: 10/2007 It's now on DVD and we  have had a number 2 - went to DVD passing the big screen. NO RAH feel.
Lost in Space
When I was a kid I watched Lost In Space on TV. I liked the idea behind the show, but the TV show was hokey. (This was durning the time of Star Trek and LIS didn't come anywhere near Star Trek). I felt the same thing about Time Tunnel and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, so you may see a pattern forming here.A few years ago a series of Lost In Space comics came out, doing it the way it should have been done on the TV show. I enjoyed the short lived comics very much. But at that time there was only hope of a good movie being made. The Movie is here!! Its great!! Don West is a space war hero, who is upset to have to babyset the Robinson on their trip. Dr. Robinson created the Jupiter 2, Judy is a science working on the Jupiter 2 also. Will is a boy genius, who's father doesn't realize it. Penny is a teenager who feels her world is ending to have to go on the trip. Maureen is the sciencist/Mother who keeps her head when troupble happens. Dr. Smith is truly evil and Robot is Robot...If you are famiullar to the TV show, the above sound about the same, but they are not. They are more real. The effects are realistic, the creatures are Jim Henson (so we had muppet evil creatures and muppet good creature.)I don't want to say too much, except go see it. I think Fans of the old TV show will like it. Fans of the Comics will like it. And SF fans will like it. - so if you are in one or more of these groups - See the Video.
GALAXY QUEST
This is a comedy with a SF setting, but to any of you who have been to a Star Trek con it will bring back memories! Tim Allen makes a wonderful Capt. in the tradition of James Kirk:-). To me the best parts are the ones at the Galaxy Quest con - so much like a Star Trek Con and you will reconize some of the people there or at least people like some of them. (You may even see yourself!) Its a lot of fun. You can get this on VHS or DVD.
The Wild Wild West
Yes its falls under SF/Fantasy - Being a fan of the TV show, when I heard that Will Smith would be playing James West I went West was White. It will not work, I will not like it...WRONG Will Smith is James West and TV show, what TV show....It was great and it was funny. Now the tape just came out and I want to own it as soon as I can find it in letter Box. Also would like to see another please...
Marvel Comics on the Big Screen!
As of this writing we have had X-Men 1 & 2, SpiderMan, DareDevil, and Hulk. I have only good to say about any of them. They stay very close to the comics. Yes there are some changes, so good and some bad. In the X-Men Jean seems to take the Beast place as the scientist - would like to see the Beast in future films. Ice Man is made younger - he's one of the X-Men in training instead being the same age as Scot and Jean. Things like this don't hurt the film at all.
In Spiderman the biggest change is the webbing - it's nateral, not something Peter invents. I'm sure Stan wishes he had though of it! There are a few other changes - like MJ being there from the begining and her family life not being the same.
I had to laugh - I was talking to someone and the Hulk came up. She said she didn't like it because they changed it to much! This took me a little by surprise as I had felt the did a fairly good job getting it like the comic. Then she says they even changed his name from David to Bruce!! I wonder how many others who only knew the Hulk from the TV series felt the same way? The ones of us who had been fans of the comics were happy they finally got it right and the fans of the TV show were upset because they changed it so much!
DareDevil - the Man without Fear....I didn't think a good DareDevil movie could be made - but they did it. Couldn't believe how well the adapted the comic. King Pin may have changed color - but you forgot soon and when you see the comic again you will wonder why the colored him wrong!
All the above are on both VHS and DVD. If you are getting Spiderman on DVD hunt up the Widescreen version - it comes with a third disk that contains interviews with Stan Lee. And it's only a few dollars more. (They had them at Walmart during Christmas 2003.) (2005 Update - add Spiderman 2 and the Punisher to the list- both WOW...Punisher didn't make it in the movies let hope it does on the DVD - would like like to see more.)

(UPDATE:10/2007: We have had Spiderman 3 - Vendom and Sandman Very GOOD!  X-Men 3- disapointing story, but a lot of need X-Men, Beast was GREAT. Ghost Rider - Nic Cage Johnny Blaze Yeah!  Electra - nice, but didn't go anyware.  Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four and the Rise of the Silver Surfer - Both better than expected.   The Big G sucked in Rise, but besides that Nice! Are can be gotten of DVD. And in the furture we can look forward to: Iron Man, Punisher 2, Hulk 2(a retooling or start over) Thor, Wolverine, Magento, Ghost Rider 2, Avengers, Ant-man and may be She Hulk. We can only wait.)
