Doctor Who started as a children show (Classic Shows) in 1963 with the Doctor as a Grand father and his companions were his “grandchildren”. Unlike other series they work into the story line how The Doctor changes from one actor to another. The Doctor becomes a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey.  His time and space ship is called a TARDIS - the Doctor’s TARDIS got stuck with the outer appearance of a police call box. (Noted for being larger on the inside than on the outside.) The series got more and more older people following it.  The classic show ended in 1989. Then in 1996 a made for TV show was made that was prime time, not a children show.  It went over well with the fans and gathered new fans.  With it’s success the Modern series started in 2005. Like the made for TV movie the series was now an adult SF show, both series being made by the BBC. The biggest difference between the series being the budget being bigger for adult programing than for children programing.

Since the Doctor is a time traveler we have several episodes where the Doctor runs into himself in another version. John Hurt’s Doctor appears with Matt Smith for several episodes of Smith’s run as the doctor (along with most of the others)

Starting with the 60th Anniversary Specials Disney+ will be the USA home of Doctor Who.
